Visa-Free Countries for Indian Passport Holders – 2027
Which countries Indian passport holders can visit without a visa, how visa-free differs from visa on arrival and e-visa, and how to check before you book.
Indian passport holders can enter a number of countries without getting a visa in advance, but the list is not fixed and no single number is official. The Henley Passport Index, which uses data from the International Air Transport Association, reported in its October 2026 edition that India ranks 84th, with access to 55 destinations. That is down from 57 a year earlier, according to Business Today. Earlier 2026 editions showed 55 or 56 destinations, so the figure changes from one edition to the next.
Why totals differ
Different sources count visa-free entry, visa on arrival and electronic travel authorisations differently, and the index covers 227 destinations including territories. Some countries are added or removed during the year. Treat any single number as a rough guide, not as legal advice.
Visa-free, visa on arrival and e-visa are different
- Visa-free: you enter with a valid passport. The permitted stay is set by each country and is often between 14 and 90 days.
- Visa on arrival: you receive the visa at the border, usually for a fee. Check the accepted payment methods before you travel.
- E-visa or ETA: you apply online before travel. These are not visa-free, even when they appear on the same lists.
Destinations where rules change often
Thailand is a recent example. Indian tourists had a 60-day visa-free stay, and from 15 September 2026 the visa-free stay is 30 days. Our Thailand entry guide covers the details. Other popular destinations, such as Japan and the UK, do require a visa for Indian citizens; see our Japan visa guide and our UK rule changes page.
Common mistakes
- Treating a ranking or a list as a legal rule. Only the destination country sets its entry rules.
- Counting visa on arrival as visa-free. You may still need to carry cash, photos and supporting documents for the border officer.
- Assuming an old article is still right. Stay limits and eligibility change, as Thailand showed in 2026.
- Forgetting arrival forms and onward tickets. A visa-free entry can still be refused if the officer is not satisfied with your plans.
How to check before you book
- Check the official foreign ministry or embassy page for the destination, not a list alone.
- Confirm your passport validity. Many countries require six months or more.
- Check whether you need a return or onward ticket, proof of funds or proof of accommodation.
- Check whether you also need an arrival form, such as Thailand’s digital arrival card.
- Use the Henley Passport Index for ranking comparisons, but treat it as a guide rather than a legal source.
