Transit Visa Rules for Indian Passport Holders
When Indian passport holders need a transit visa, how airside transit differs from leaving the airport, and what to check before a connecting flight.
Whether you need a transit visa depends on the country where you connect, the airport, whether you leave the secure area, and your own passport and visas. A layover does not always mean that no visa is needed, and rules can change with little notice.
Key principles
- Staying in the international transit area does not always avoid visa rules. Some countries require a transit visa even for airside transit.
- Leaving the transit area to enter the country usually requires a visa or entry permission.
- If your bags are not checked through to your final destination, or you are on separate tickets, you may have to pass through immigration, which changes what you need.
- Rules can differ between airports in the same country, and can change over time.
United Kingdom
Indian nationals generally need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) to change flights at a UK airport, even if they never pass through UK immigration. You may be exempt if you hold certain valid visas from other countries, such as the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand or the Schengen area, but the conditions are specific. If you need to pass through UK border control, for example to collect bags or stay overnight, you need a different visa, such as a Visitor in Transit visa or a Standard Visitor visa. The UK ETA does not apply to Indian passport holders. Use the GOV.UK checker for your exact route before you book.
Schengen countries
Some Schengen airports require an Airport Transit Visa for Indian nationals, and the rules differ between countries. Reports conflict for some airports, including in Germany, so check the specific airport and the embassy of that country. A Schengen short-stay visa also covers transit through the Schengen area.
Other hubs
Some hubs offer visa-free transit under conditions, such as holding a valid visa for another country or having a confirmed onward ticket within a set time. These conditions change, so check the transit country’s official immigration page rather than relying on a forum or an old blog post.
Before you fly
- Check the official immigration page or embassy of the transit country.
- Check the airport’s transit rules and the airline’s requirements at check-in.
- Carry your onward ticket and any visa needed for your final destination.
- Find out whether your bags are checked through to your final destination.
- If you want to leave the airport on a long layover, check whether you need a full visa first.
