Japan Tourist Visa Requirements for Indians
Japan tourist visa for Indian citizens: eVISA for single entry, the INR 500 fee after Japan's July 2026 fee rise, where to apply and documents to prepare.
Most Indian citizens need a visa to visit Japan for tourism. Japan does not offer visa on arrival to Indian passport holders, so the visa must be arranged before you travel.
Which visa to apply for
Indian tourists usually apply for a short-term tourist visa. According to the Embassy of Japan in India, single-entry tourist visas have been issued electronically as a JAPAN eVISA since 1 April 2024. You still submit your application through VFS Global as before, but you receive the visa in electronic form instead of a sticker. The embassy lists eVISA eligibility as Indian and foreign nationals who live in India. Multiple-entry visas and visas for other purposes are still issued as a sticker in your passport.
Fees
Japan raised its standard visa fees worldwide from 1 July 2026, to JPY 15,000 for a single entry and JPY 30,000 for multiple entries. Indian passport holders are not affected: the Embassy of Japan in India has confirmed that Indian nationals continue to pay INR 500 for both single-entry and multiple-entry visas, as reported by Business Today. VFS Global charges a separate service fee. Published figures for that charge differ, so check the current amount on the VFS Japan page before you pay.
Where to apply
Applications are submitted through the Japan Visa Application Centres run by VFS Global. They serve the Embassy of Japan in New Delhi and the consulates in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. Which mission covers you depends on where you live, and the VFS page lists the jurisdictions.
Documents to prepare
- Passport with enough validity for your trip and blank pages
- Completed and signed visa application form
- Recent passport photo that meets Japan’s specific size and background rules
- Flight itinerary, including your return ticket
- Hotel bookings or accommodation for the full stay
- Bank statements or income tax documents, as requested by your application centre
Timing
Processing times vary by mission and season, so apply early, especially for peak travel periods such as the spring cherry-blossom season. Check the VFS page for the current processing time and submission rules before you plan your booking dates.
Common reasons for delay
- Photos that do not meet the size or background requirements
- Missing hotel or return flight proof
- Dates that do not match between the form and the itinerary
An approved visa does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers in Japan make the final decision at the border, so keep your itinerary, accommodation details and return ticket with you.
