The West Bengal government and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a collaborative framework for conservation and tourism development, with a focus on strengthening heritage and river tourism in the state.
State Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh said the government plans to renovate heritage properties using state funds and introduce light-and-sound shows and cultural programmes at selected sites.
The government will prioritise heritage locations that attract higher visitor numbers, with the aim of showcasing Bengal’s royal history and expanding the tourism experience around its historic properties.
Under the agreement, the ASI will identify monuments requiring essential visitor facilities and oversee compliance with the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958.
The state government is also developing a ‘Kolkata Key’ app to help tourists navigate and discover attractions across the city. The digital initiative is expected to provide visitors with easier access to information on heritage and tourism sites.
West Bengal also plans to showcase its local culture during Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, scheduled for January 7–9 next year. The initiatives form part of the state’s broader efforts to combine conservation, cultural programming and improved visitor facilities to promote tourism.
