The country has officially launched its new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, allowing eligible Indian travellers to apply for travel approval completely online with processing targeted within 24 to 48 hours. The initiative is designed to simplify travel for tourists and selected short-term business visitors while reducing paperwork and processing delays.
Unlike the traditional visa application process, the new ETA replaces the physical visa sticker with a secure digital authorisation linked directly to the traveller’s passport. Applicants no longer need to visit a visa application centre, making the entire process faster and more convenient. The online system reflects South Africa’s broader efforts to modernise immigration services through digital technology and biometric verification.
The ETA is available for eligible travellers planning tourism, family visits, or certain short-term business trips of up to 90 days. During its validity, it also supports multiple entries, providing greater flexibility for travellers with more than one visit planned. However, the ETA cannot be used for employment or extended long-term stays, and final admission remains subject to immigration checks upon arrival.
Applying for the South African ETA is straightforward. Travellers need to create an account on the official Department of Home Affairs ETA portal, upload the required documents, complete biometric identity verification using a compatible smartphone, pay the applicable visa fee, and submit the application electronically. Applicants can monitor the status of their application online throughout the process.
At present, the ETA system is available for travellers entering South Africa through O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg), Cape Town International Airport, and Lanseria International Airport. Authorities have confirmed that additional airports and ports of entry will be included as the programme expands in future phases.
