Egypt is preparing to modernize its airport immigration system with the launch of a new digital visa-on-arrival platform at Cairo International Airport beginning in August 2026. The new initiative is expected to improve the arrival experience for international travelers by replacing traditional paper visa procedures with a faster and more efficient digital process.

Under the upcoming system, eligible visitors arriving in Egypt will be able to obtain their visa-on-arrival digitally through online applications, airport kiosks, or mobile platforms. Travelers will receive a digital confirmation or QR code that can be presented during immigration checks at Cairo Airport.

The Egyptian government says the move is designed to reduce congestion at airport counters, shorten waiting times, and support the country’s growing tourism industry. Cairo International Airport, which serves millions of passengers every year, will become the first airport in Egypt to implement the digital visa-on-arrival service before the system expands to other airports across the country.

Currently, many international tourists arriving in Egypt purchase a paper visa sticker at immigration counters before entering the country. This manual process can often lead to long queues during peak travel periods. With the new digital system, travelers will be able to complete most of the visa process electronically before arrival or through self-service stations at the airport.

According to reports, passengers may be allowed to apply for the digital visa up to 48 hours before departure. Payments are also expected to move toward online transactions and card-based systems, reducing the need for cash payments at airport terminals.

The digital transformation is part of Egypt’s broader tourism modernization strategy aimed at making the country more accessible and traveler-friendly. Tourism remains one of Egypt’s most important economic sectors, with famous destinations including Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada, and the Pyramids of Giza attracting millions of tourists annually.

Travel experts believe the introduction of digital visa-on-arrival services could significantly improve Egypt’s global tourism competitiveness. Many countries around the world have already adopted electronic visa systems and QR-code based immigration procedures to simplify international travel.

For travelers, the biggest advantage will likely be faster processing and improved convenience. Instead of waiting in separate visa purchase lines, visitors can potentially complete the process digitally before reaching immigration checkpoints. The move could especially benefit family travelers, group tours, and international tourists arriving during holiday seasons.

Indian travelers planning to visit Egypt should still check the latest eligibility rules before departure. While the digital system changes how the visa is issued, entry eligibility and documentation requirements may continue to depend on nationality, existing visas, residence permits, or tour package arrangements.

Travel agencies are also expected to benefit from the new system, as authorized operators may assist travelers with digital visa applications and pre-arrival processing. Airlines and tourism companies are likely to promote the smoother entry experience as Egypt continues expanding its tourism recovery efforts.

Egypt’s digital visa-on-arrival launch reflects a growing global trend toward smart border systems and paperless travel experiences. If the Cairo Airport rollout is successful, additional Egyptian airports may gradually adopt the same digital immigration model in the future.

The introduction of the new system could make travel to Egypt more convenient for millions of visitors while helping airport authorities improve efficiency, security, and passenger flow management.
