Haryana urged to leverage heritage for tourism growth

Haryana needs to leverage its rich cultural, historical and mythological heritage while showcasing its modern attractions to develop into a major tourism destination, said KM Pandurang, IAS, at the Bharat Dekho Tourism Summit 2026 in Chennai.

Pandurang highlighted Haryana’s strong association with the Mahabharata and Kurukshetra, while noting that the state’s tourism potential extends beyond religious and heritage attractions.

He identified Kurukshetra as an anchor for spiritual and cultural tourism, while Gurugram could offer experiences suited to younger travellers. Haryana’s food, biodiversity and connections with the film industry were also highlighted as areas with potential.

Pandurang said festivals and cultural events could play an important role in showcasing the state’s heritage while creating opportunities for local communities, artists and craftspeople.

He also pointed to the state’s varied tourism offerings, including its culinary traditions, biodiversity parks and urban experiences. Its location on routes connecting travellers to northern destinations could further support its tourism proposition.

His remarks highlighted the opportunity to position Haryana as a multi-dimensional destination combining spirituality, history, cuisine, nature, urban experiences and popular culture to attract a wider range of domestic and international travellers.
