Beginning from July 15, 2026, Slovakia will launch a series of immigration reforms that will include a number of innovations related to foreigners’ stay in the country. One of the most important of them will be the prolongation of the validity of the national visa to 120 days to give enough time to foreigners to go through all the necessary procedures to obtain residence after their arrival to the country.

The changes in the visa policies will be based on the recent amendment to the Act on the Residence of Foreigners. The decision about these amendments has been already made, and they will be launched in order to modernize the immigration policy of the country.

Slovakia’s national visa or commonly called as the Type D visa used to be valid for up to 90 days based on the old policies. However, through the new rules, this time has increased to 120 days. The extra time ensures that foreign citizens have enough time to apply for temporary residence permits, register their presence and arrange their work without any hurry.

The extended period of visa validity would certainly help immigrants and employers who had to cope with tight schedule because of the insufficient number of appointment hours at the foreign police department.

Moreover, the reforms bring about changes in terms of the simplification of processing mechanisms. For example, one of the major steps is the creation of the Central Visa Authority that should make the visa procedure much more coordinated and faster than it is now, thus contributing to increasing attractiveness of Slovakia among skilled workers.

Additionally, there are going to be introduced some flexible rules for the residence permit holders with regard to unemployment periods. Under the new conditions, if a person has got a residence permit and has become unemployed in Slovakia, he/she will be able to stay in the country and search for another job for a considerably longer period of time.

The new regulations contain clauses meant to make it easier for individuals to apply for visa applications. In some cases, applicants will not be required to file their visa applications in person; this is meant to make the process easier for the applicants. This will especially come in handy to applicants from countries that face difficulties filing in person.

This is because the regulations are also in line with the ongoing digitalization of Slovakia’s immigration process. Digital application, proper documentation, and transparency are among the many elements that constitute the newly adopted system.

The importance of this decision is even greater due to the competition of European states in attracting talented workforce in such sectors as IT, medicine, industry, etc. By increasing flexibility and efficiency of the immigration policy, Slovakia presents itself as a potential destination for foreign specialists who are looking for chances in the EU.

It should be emphasized that while the national visa can serve as the visa for entering Slovakia, it cannot be regarded as a permit for staying in Slovakia. In order to reside and work in Slovakia, a foreign citizen will need to obtain a permit for temporary residence, which will become possible using the extended validity period of the visa.

These reforms also tackle the issues that Slovakia faced before with regard to processing time and inefficiency. With the reduction of time spent in processing and with more flexible procedures, Slovakia hopes to increase its attractiveness as a country for foreign talents.

The industrialists have expressed their approval of the reforms saying that these will be beneficial not only for employers but also for the employees.

Conclusion, the new immigration policies, which become operational as of July 15, 2026, represent a big step forward in the modernization of Slovakia’s visa policy. The implementation of the 120-day national visa along with other measures shows that the country is determined to attract talented foreigners and stimulate economic growth. In the course of implementing these changes, Slovakia will certainly consolidate its position as a rising destination for foreigners.
