Flight operations at Dubai International Airport were temporarily suspended after a drone strike hit a fuel storage tank near the airport complex, triggering a large fire and causing major disruption to air traffic.
According to reports from The Economic Times, the incident occurred when a drone struck a fuel tank in the vicinity of the airport, leading to a fire that produced thick smoke visible from several kilometers away. Authorities immediately activated emergency response protocols and temporarily halted flight operations to ensure passenger safety.
Emergency teams including firefighters from Dubai Civil Defence rushed to the scene and worked quickly to bring the blaze under control. Officials confirmed that there were no reported injuries, although precautionary safety measures required temporary suspension of flights arriving and departing from the airport.
Dubai International Airport is one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world and serves as the main hub for Emirates airline operations. Any disruption at the airport can quickly affect global aviation networks connecting Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
Due to the sudden suspension, several flights were either delayed or diverted to nearby airports. In one reported case, an Emirates flight traveling from Kochi to Dubai had to return to its origin airport after the incident caused temporary airspace restrictions around Dubai.
Authorities advised passengers scheduled to travel through Dubai to check flight status updates directly with their airlines before heading to the airport. Travelers were also asked to monitor official airport announcements for the latest developments regarding flight operations.
Dubai officials confirmed that emergency teams were able to contain the fire after several hours of firefighting efforts. Following safety inspections, airport authorities gradually resumed flight operations while airlines worked to manage delays and reschedule disrupted flights.
Several roads around the airport were also temporarily closed by Dubai Police to allow emergency vehicles quick access to the site and ensure public safety during the firefighting operation.
The drone strike incident has raised fresh concerns about aviation security in the region. With increasing geopolitical tensions across parts of the Middle East, security analysts warn that infrastructure such as airports, energy facilities, and transport hubs could become potential targets.
Dubai authorities have launched an investigation into the drone strike to determine the origin of the drone and assess how it was able to reach the area near the airport’s fuel infrastructure. Security agencies are also reviewing surveillance systems and protective measures around key facilities.
Despite the disruption, airport officials emphasized that quick emergency response and strong coordination among security agencies helped prevent a larger crisis. Flights began resuming gradually once authorities confirmed that the situation was fully under control.
Dubai International Airport handles millions of international passengers each year and plays a critical role in global travel and trade. Even a short-term suspension of flights can affect thousands of travelers and airline operations worldwide.
Passengers traveling to or through Dubai in the coming days are advised to remain updated through airline notifications and official airport communication channels.
